GFD Honeywell Donztion

GEISMAR, La (February 10, 2006) – The City of Gonzales Fire Department has received a donation of $118,750 from Honeywell Corporation to purchase a new state-of-the-art vapor detection system to aid in the safe and prompt response to industrial and other incidents within Ascension Parish. The ceremonial check presentation was made earlier today at Honeywell’s Geismar plant before several plant employees and members of the Department. Gonzales Mayor Johnny Berthelot and Fire Chief Butch Browning received the donation from plant manager Bill Lessig. Honeywell’s donation will allow the Department to purchase a Smiths Detection Portable Gas and Vapor Indentifier for use in responding to fires, chemical releases, and train, truck and ship accidents that occur within the parish. At the present time only the City of New Orleans and Louisiana National Guard own such state-of-the-art technology within Louisiana. “Hurricane Katrina showed us all how vulnerable communities can become in times of tragedy. Over 4000 Honeywell employees have donated more than $630,000 to support hurricane relief and recovery efforts, joining the corporation in participating in many ways to assist those in need. Today’s donation will help first responders carry out their mission in a very localized way. We are delighted to be a part of helping to protect our friends and neighbors in Ascension Parish,” Lessig said. The Honeywell Humanitarian Relief Fund is part of Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s community outreach effort. Together with leading public and non-profit institutions, Honeywell Hometown Solutions focuses its efforts on Family Safety and Security; Housing and Shelter; and Science and Math Education and has developed powerful programs to address these needs in the communities it serves.
